NC wants better rail access to port

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – State officials want the North Carolina Railroad Company to promise to contribute $70 million for a new storage facility at the Morehead City port.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported officials would like to see a promise of the money over the next decade to allow the port to start shipping wood pellets to European electric utilities as early as 2014.

Supporters say the port project would give the state a significant share of the biomass fuel market. They say it could create 200 jobs and increase freight yard traffic in Morehead City by 300 percent.

North Carolina Railroad president Scott Saylor says it will be weeks before a decision is made. Tom Bradshaw with the State Ports Authority had hoped for a decision this week.

1 dead after fight in Anson County prison

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

POLKTON, N.C. (AP) – Officials say one inmate is dead and one was injured in a fight at an Anson County correctional center.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety say a fight broke out around 1:30 p.m. Friday at Lanesboro Correctional Institution, which is a high security prison in Polkton, about 45 miles southeast of Charlotte. It has 1,000 cells.

Spokeswoman Pamela Walker identified the dead inmate as 35-year-old Wesley Turner. Records show Turner had served time for a number of offenses, including murder and assault on a public official. The records also show he attempted to break out of prison.

The injured inmate wasn’t identified.

Walker said prison managers locked down the institution while the incident is investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Anson County Sheriff’s Office.
