NC State Fair attendance 965,000 this year

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Officials say more than 965,000 people attended the North Carolina State Fair this year.

Fair officials said Monday that total attendance for the year was 965,237, making the event that ended Sunday the third highest ever.

Last year just over 1 million people attended the fair. In 2010, attendance nearly reached 1.1 million.

State Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler says officials changed access to some of the animals this year. That came after two dozen people got sick from an E. coli outbreak last year. Hand-washing stations got better lighting and larger signs. Some stations explained how to wash hands.

Thousands flock to NC Oyster Festival

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — With the opening of commercial oyster season on October 15, what better way to celebrate than by heading over to the North Carolina Oyster Festival?

It is estimated that close to 30,000 people came to the tiny town of Ocean Isle Beach, which has a full time population of close to 600, to taste some of North Carolina’s best shellfish.

“It started out as friends getting together and having a good time with fellowship and it has sort of grown,” said Shannon Viera of the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce. “Now instead of just having a hundred or so friends having oysters together it’s thousands and thousands, and they enjoy it. The one thing they want is a t-shirt, number one. They have to get their Oyster Festival t-shirt, and some of them have every single shirt that has ever been printed.”

All proceeds from the Oyster Festival go towards funding various programs for the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce.
