Cox trial juror: “I was trying to help him out”

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

Whiteville, NC (WWAY) – After five and a half hours of deliberation jurors in the Stevie Cox officer impersonation trial were hung at a seven to five vote of not guilty which forced the judge to declare a mistrial.

“Well we’re disappointed that the jury was unable to reach a verdict, but we certainly think they gave it their best shot,” said defense attorney Mike Willis.

The split jury created tensions within the jury room as jurors debated the letter of the law.

“I would have found him guilty,” said jury foreman Donald Wise. “Do I think the intent was there? No I don’t!”

“I was trying to help him out a little bit because I knew he was a nice guy,” said juror Pamula Mitchell. “I don’t know him personally, but I just knew that he was truthful and he just got a little nervous. I just think he is not guilty.”

With the ruling of a mistrial the ball falls back into the court of District Attorney John David who could request that this trial be moved to another county and tried once again.

Davidson County resident dies from complications of meningitis

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

DENTON, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina health officials say a Davidson County resident has died from complications of fungal meningitis she likely contracted from a tainted steroid injection in her back.

State Health Director Laura Gerald said Friday’s death was the first in North Carolina from the outbreak that began when a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy shipped contaminated medication in August.

Gerald says one other meningitis case has been found in the state, and that person is recovering out of the hospital. Twenty-three people have died and nearly 300 have been sickened across the nation.

Gerald wouldn’t identify the North Carolina case, but her family identified her as 77-year-old Elwina Shaw of Denton. They told reporters she was sick with debilitating headaches for more than a month before health officials realized what was wrong.
