UPDATE: Passenger charged in fatal Pender Co. crash still in hospital

Friday, October 19th, 2012

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — According to Pender County District Attorney Ben David, the passenger charged in the fatal car crash last week is still in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, receiving reconstructive surgery. Following the crash that killed 27-year-old Jennie Moore, Lance Powers, 26, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving and no operator’s license.

It happened last Friday on NC 53 West about two miles east of Atkinson. Highway Patrol says Moore overcorrected, crossed the center line and crashed head on into another vehicle.

First Sgt. W.L. Thurston says there is information that led investigators to believe Powers snatched the steering wheel, which may have caused the accident. David could not comment on this detail.

David says the investigation is ongoing and all families involved in the crash are being interviewed. He says the mother and her two children that were in the vehicle hit by Moore are now all out of the hospital.

David says if any more charges are filed, he plans to hold a news conference.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A trip to the police station got worse for a man already under arrest when officers say he hid heroin in the patrol car that took him there.

Wilmington Police say they arrested Vernon Gore, 38, on three outstanding warrants after they found drugs in a room at the Travel Lodge on Market Street while responding to a call about drugs and prostitution.

After officers took Gore to Wilmington Police headquarters, they say they found a Crown Royal bag containing heroin and drug paraphernalia under the back seat of the patrol car in which he had been transported.

Gore is in the New Hanover County Jail under a $55,900 bond for felony possession of Schedule I, possession of drug paraphernalia, four misdemeanor failures to appear, and two bond surrenders.

USA TODAY: First look: Hough and Duhamel in ‘Safe Haven’

Friday, October 19th, 2012

By: Andrea Mandell, USA TODAY

The latest film adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, in theaters the week before Valentine’s Day, has a ‘thriller aspect,’ says star Julianne Hough.

The next time a Nicholas Sparks movie hits the silver screen, expect it to be frosty.

That’s because Safe Haven, the author’s chilling love story, is set to hit theaters the week before Valentine’s Day.

"Usually, Nicholas Sparks movies tend to be strictly romance novels-slash-movies," says Julianne Hough, who stars as Katie Feldman, a secretive woman on the run who lands in the sleepy town of Southport, N.C. "What’s fun about Safe Haven is it’s got a thriller aspect to it."
