Sandy moves off of Cuba; Wind/rain likely for NC coast.

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Sandy rapidly intensified overnight, but looks to be weaking again after it passed over Cuba. The storm continues to head due north toward the Bahamas as expected.

Once the system gets north of the Bahamas, all indications right now are that it will start to curve slightly out to sea; staying just off the NC coast by a few hundred miles. All models are currently showing this trend, and history supports this trend as well. This may sound like a large distance, but keep in mind that Sandy is a large storm and will be expanding in size as it heads north. That means even with this offshore path, the storm would be close enough that clouds, some heavy rain, and even some gusty winds even near tropical storm force will at least be a possibility anywhere from Friday night through Sunday.

Keep in mind these effects can greatly change with only a few miles difference in storm track, so keep it here as we fine tune the forecast. If the storm were to come a bit closer, we could experience much more in the way of wind and rain. The best thing you can do is just keep yourself in tune with our forecast at this point as we learn more about the storm.

No matter what happens, we will find high surf, high astronomical tides, possible beach erosion, and dangerous rip currents at the beaches beginning Friday and lasting until Monday.

Powell standing by Obama in 2012 presidential race

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a longtime Republican, is sticking with President Barack Obama in this year’s election.

He tells “CBS This Morning” he respects Mitt Romney but thinks he’s been vague on many issues.

Speaking of Obama, Powell said the president got the United States out of Iraq and has laid out a plan for leaving Afghanistan “and didn’t get us into any new wars.”

He praises Obama’s economic performance, saying that while difficult choices are ahead on taxes, spending and budgetary policies, “steadily, I think we’ve begun to come out of the dive and we’re gaining altitude.” Powell, a retired general, also formerly was a White House chief of staff and chairman of the military’s Joint Chief of Staffs.

Powell says that he’s still a Republican.
