McCrory, Dalton hit on tried themes in last debate

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) – The major-party candidates for North Carolina governor tried to leave a lasting impression with the electorate in their final televised debate.

Democrat Walter Dalton told the debate audience at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount and a statewide TV audience Wednesday night he would fight for the voters if elected next month, treat teachers with respect and push for equal pay for women. Dalton suggested Republican Pat McCrory would support special interests and corporations.

McCrory said he would push a four-part plan to improve the state’s economy and education system that would focus upon long-term goals.

Dalton, the sitting lieutenant governor, kept trying to pick at the former Charlotte mayor on ethics and tax reform. McCrory said Dalton backed a higher sales tax with outgoing Gov. Beverly Perdue.
