Volunteers search for missing Belmont store worker

Monday, November 19th, 2012

BELMONT, N.C. (AP) – Volunteers have wrapped up another search for a Belmont store worker missing for more than a month.

Family and friends gathered on Saturday to look for Elizabeth Stonger. They also spent the day handing out flyers.

Stonger was last seen Oct. 14 driving away from the Wal-Mart where she worked.

Authorities say the 27-year-old mother left the store for lunch that day, waved to some people and drove away from the store alone. Her family hasn’t had any communication with her since.

On the evening she disappeared, her cellphone was used in McDowell County. Since then, there’s been no activity on the phone.

NC legislators nearing unemployment debt proposal

Monday, November 19th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — New Republican leaders at the Legislature vowed last year to rid North Carolina of its $2 billion-plus debt to the federal government for unemployment benefits and put the state system on firm financial footing.

Now legislators are aiming next month to unveil their proposal. Based on interviews, it appears business would have to keep paying more to pay down the debt, but future jobless workers could see reduced benefits.

North Carolina is among nearly 20 states that began borrowing money at the height of Great Recession to pay for a flood of unemployment claims and haven’t yet repaid the federal government.

Republican Gov.-elect Pat McCrory also says the debt will be a front-burner issue when he takes office in January, the same month lawmakers begin their work in earnest.

NC couple charged in death of 5-month-old

Monday, November 19th, 2012

MOUNT AIRY, NC (AP) — A Mount Airy couple has been charged in the death of a 5-month-old child in their care.

Surry County Graham Atkinson says 30-year-old Billie Jo Floyd and 32-year-old Justin Wayne Barker were arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Floyd’s child.

Atkinson says authorities were called to Barker’s house Friday after a report of an infant in cardiac arrest. The baby was later pronounced dead at a hospital, and the sheriff says authorities became concerned and charged the couple after noticing injuries on the baby’s body.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning. Floyd and Barker were jailed Sunday on $1 million bond each, and it wasn’t known if they had attorneys.
