Custom furniture is a hole-in-one

Saturday, November 17th, 2012

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY)– What was one man’s creative idea to combat the recession, is now a hobby that is earning him lots of praise. Eric Hine is a Wilmington resident who doubles as a unique artist. He got into sculpting furniture a few years ago. He built his first table in 2010, and used this experience to make six more custom tables with the help of local artists and Kids Making It in downtown Wilmington.

One custom table in particular features a detailed golf course with trees, bird houses, and even a bridge that lights up inside of the frame. This landscape is built and painted into a hollow part of the wooden table, and then covered with a glass surface. Imagine setting your morning tea on the green or the fairway. It puts a whole different spin on “teeing up.”

What is most memorable about this unique furniture is how the artists are distributing it. Even after working on the custom golf table for over 122 hours, Eric and co-artist Tamica Katzman in association with members of KMI have decided to auction the piece off at the Wilmington Fur Ball–an organization close to Eric’s heart. Half the proceeds will then be donated to Adopt an Angel.

Eric says he still has a few more tables at the tee box with KMI and he does not plan on becoming bored of his hobby anytime soon. He has officially began the business “Shadowtables” in hopes of capturing the unique ideas of buyers interested in a custom centerpiece for their home.
