Perdue, Raleigh working on Dix land deal

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Gov. Beverly Perdue’s administration and the City of Raleigh are working on a deal to turn land where a North Carolina state mental hospital has stood into a regional park.

WRAL-TV reported Monday (http://bit.ly/10KjM2K ) a tentative plan would have the state leasing the Dorothea Dix Hospital property to the city for several decades. The city would develop the park but lease some of the property back to the state. The station cited documents from Perdue’s office and a key aide for Perdue.

The hospital served the state for 150 years but its last patients moved to another hospital this year. State health employees still work on the campus. The lease-back arrangement would give the state time to consolidate employees elsewhere.

The Council of State would have to approve any deal.

People lit up over calling Christmas tree Holiday tree

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There is a big beautiful tree downtown just across from the Federal Courthouse, but what is it? When we ran a story about the lighting of the Holiday tree, it lit up our web site with comments.

The name came from the city which named the event, they put out this statement.

“The use of the word Holiday instead of Christmas has been an issue for governmental
organizations across the country for the last several years. By using the word
‘Holiday,’ the City of Wilmington is trying to maintain a balancing act between the
Constitutional rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion. We make every
effort to be respectful of all beliefs and forms of celebration while also adhering
To the law.”

But the people we spoke to still prefer Christmas tree.

“I’d like to think that you can call it whatever you want as long as it means something to you , I do think that holiday tree is an over P.C. term.” Ethan Sapp a student at UNCW told us.

“Well they can call it what they want…it’s my Christmas tree, that’s what I call it. “ Fred Smith a Wilmington resident announced.

“It’s a federal holiday, it’s called Christmas . Even our own government recognizes this as being Christmas.” John Keilbler of Wilmington said.
