Families host marines for Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

WILMINGTON, N.C (WWAY)–Thanksgiving is a day meant to be shared with family and friends, but some people chose to invite strangers into their homes. Several families in Wilmington gave thanks to those who serve our country by welcoming marines over to Thanksgiving dinner.

Families like Michael and Deborah Conrad enjoy the extra company. They enjoy learning about the marines and think it is important to make sure our military enjoys the holiday away from home.

“It is really rewarding. They are young, they signed up to serve our country. It’s just a nice thing to do,” says Deborah.

Eddie Henriques and David Washington are two young marines who spent the day with the Conards. They are grateful for the opportunity. They learned about historical sites in Wilmington and really enjoyed the drive along Carolina Beach.

“It just made me feel really good that there are still people out there that support and care about the military; enough to go out of there way and make room to spend with us”

Henriquez and Washington learned about historical sites in Wilmington and really enjoyed the drive along Carolina Beach.

“It was an experience,” Washington says. “I’ve never been to a beach so wide. Just looking over the water and looking at all the wildlife…it was nice. It was relaxing. It was a change of environment for me.”

Both the families and marines say the experience is rewarding. They hope more families sign up next year.

Gallop before the gravy

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY)– Runners laced up this morning for a 5k race called “Gallop for the Gravy.” The race took off at the YMCA on Market Street and wrapped around Wilmington. Runners of all ages participated in the event, some running just for fun while others pushed themselves to finish first.

“I got second place,” says Clint Henry of Wilmington. “It was a good race for me. I grew up with Aaron and we ran together some growing up. So it was fun to push each other and just have fun, and talk to each other during the race.”

Henry was also accompanied today by his wife. He says it was his first turkey trot as a married man and he hopes to make it a tradition.
