CLAYTON, NC (WTVD) — A Cape Fear Community College student who was shot to death and robbed of a sandwich, cell phone, and $10 was remembered at a service in Clayton Wednesday.

Family and friends of 19-year-old Joshua Proutey paid their respects at the Cleveland Community Church.

Joshua’s mother Patty Proutey said the more than one hundred people who came in and out of the church reminded her of the days during her son’s life.

“Our door was a revolving door, and we had children in and out of our door constantly, and this is no different,” said Proutey.

But now visitors through that revolving door will no longer be for Joshua. According to prosecutors, he left his job and was heading to his car after working an event at the Community Arts Center in downtown Wilmington last Thursday night when four people approached and demand his wallet and anything else of value.

Proutey handed over his wallet, but was then shot in the head.

Four people are charged with first-degree murder in the case. They are Jasmine Nikole Dottin, 19, Christopher Daniel Cromartie, 23, Quintel Raheem Grady, 22, and Daniel Henry, 17. Three of the four suspects are being held without bond.

Wilmington business sends love to Connecticut shooting survivors

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington business is packing up and shipping out loads of love to Newtown, CT.

Tmuffin owner Gaby Merediz is from Connecticut and says after she heard about the shooting she knew she needed to do something to help. She decided to focus her energy on sending love and support to the community and got kids in the area in on the project.

“We just wanted to send out some love,” Merediz said. “We wanted the people of newtown to know that we were thinking about them. We thought about sending money or sending school supplies, but none of that really meant as much as sending them support and sending them love.”

Merediz sent the first couple of boxes of heart-shaped gifts to Newtown today.

She says she spoke to school officials in Connecticut who say they will hang the artwork in the new school for Sandy Hook students so they can see it when they return to class.

If you are interested in sending some love, you can drop it off at Tmuffin at 2133 Wrightsville Avenue.
