Man wanted for shooting at Fair Bluff officers

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

FAIR BLUFF, NC (WWAY) — Police in Columbus County are looking for a man they say fired at officers last night.

Investigators say Fair Bluff Police were called to a home on Railroad Street after a woman said she heard someone knock on her window. Police searched the area. They say they saw a man and chased after him, but he got away. Then they say someone fired three shots at them from across the road about 45 yards away.

Multiple agencies then helped in the search for the shooter. A K9 tracked him for a while before losing the scent.

Investigators say they’re looking for a young, black male with a slender build, dark skin and short braids. They believe the suspect is James Earl Hemingway, who police say they’ve had run-ins with before. They also say Hemingway is the chief suspect for a robbery at Cousin’s Food Mart in Fair Bluff over the weekend.

Obama pressing for policy changes after shooting

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is asking a team led by Vice President Joe Biden to offer “concrete proposals” to curb gun violence no later than January, in the aftermath of the horrific massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Obama says after he receives recommendations from Biden’s group, he will push legislation “without delay.” The president is urging Congress to hold votes on the bill.

Obama says the issue is complex but quote, “we have a deep obligation – all of us – to try.”

Biden, a longtime gun control advocate, will lead a team that will include members of Obama’s administration and outside groups.

The move comes after Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six adults were killed at the school by a gunman wielding a semi-automatic rifle.

Nutrition firm Herbalife to hire 500 at NC plant

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — Nutrition and weight-loss supplement-maker Herbalife is revamping a defunct Dell Inc. computer manufacturing plant in North Carolina for an East Coast production center that will employ about 500 in three years.

Company officials and Gov. Bev Perdue said Wednesday that Los Angeles-based Herbalife will invest about $130 million to buy and equip the 750,000-square-foot Dell plant near Winston-Salem that closed two years ago.

Herbalife will get $1 million up-front from North Carolina taxpayers, and up to $5.5 million more in state tax breaks if the company meets its targets and sustains them for 11 years. The company also could collect $3.4 million in local incentives.

State officials said the jobs will pay an average wage of $40,200, below the Forsyth County average of $42,600.
