Wilmington Police plan to ‘saturate city’ with officers this holiday

Saturday, December 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — According to a news release, the Wilmington Police Department Traffic Unit, along with other Governors Highway Safety Program partner agencies, plan to “saturate the city of Wilmington” with traffic officers over the holiday weekend.

Officers will be on the lookout for unsafe drivers, particularly those driving under the influence of alcohol, prescription medication, and drugs.

The release says the effort will be city-wide and not limited to any one particular area.

The Department of Health and Human Services will have their Booze It and Lose It bus available at the Wilmington Police Department. This will allow officers to have four breath test instruments available instead of just one.

The event is just one of many law enforcement will be conducting the last weekend of 2012.

Island of Lights New Year’s Eve celebration to be held at pier; town apologizes Ocean Front Park not completed

Saturday, December 29th, 2012

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Island of Lights New Year’s Eve celebration will be held in Kure Beach this year, but not at a new park as the town had hoped.

The town of Kure Beach apologized on its website today that construction of Ocean Front Park is not completed.

The town purchased land for the park in December, 2007 and construction began in July, 2011.

The park was supposed to be built in a year, but construction hit a snag when the town fired the original contractor for what it said was shoddy work.

The annual New Year’s celebration will begin at 9:00 p.m. near the Kure Beach Fishing Pier, with a beach ball drop and fireworks taking place at midnight.
