Friday, December 28th, 2012

The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred
early this morning.

WPD officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 5200 block of Hunter’s
Trail at 12:43 a.m. When they arrived, the resident, age 65, told them that he had
heard someone breaking the glass on his front door. He said he retrieved his handgun
and went downstairs to investigate. When he got to the bottom of the steps he could
see that the glass in the top of the door was broken.

He said when he opened the front door he looked to his left and saw someone lunging
at him with a spiked object in his hand. He fired one round at close range, striking
the person in the chest. When he turned on the porch light, he realized the person
he shot was his brother. He immediately called 911. EMS responded and transported
the brother, age 63, to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he later died. The
case is under investigation.
