Fair Bluff cops play Santa for family in need

Monday, December 24th, 2012

FAIR BLUFF, NC (WWAY) — It was a year that saw their police chief and the town’s clerk arrested on drug charges and fired. But Fair Bluff Police are ending the year with what they hope is a new tradition to help people in need.

The Fair Bluff Police Department started the town’s first Operation Santa Claus hoping, officers say, to give back to the community.

With the help of local community leaders, police received the name of a woman who is not only raising and caring for her own two children, but is also raising and caring for her two younger brothers. The members of the Fair Bluff Police Department donated their own money and raised $145 to buy clothes and toys for the needy family.

Saturday officers went to Walmart to shop for the children. While shopping, a resident of Tabor City donated a $40 gift card to help purchasing items for the children for Christmas. With the donations that were collected, all of the children received an outfit, underwear, socks and a toy each.

After shopping for the family, members of the Fair Bluff Police Department went to the home of the recipients to deliver the gifts, including a $30 for the mother/sister for her Christmas gift.

Fair Bluff Police say in the years to come, they plan to assist more families and raise more money to help the Fair Bluff community and its residents.

Grandfather Mountain sets record gust of 120 mph

Monday, December 24th, 2012

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, NC (AP) — Last week’s storm included a record wind gust for Grandfather Mountain.

Officials at the mountain say the wind gusted to 120.7 mph for three seconds last Friday. That broke the record three-second gust of 114.7 mph set on Jan. 26, 2011.

The wind gust was part of a low pressure system that brought widespread winds above 50 mph to much of the North Carolina mountains, causing power outages and knocking down trees.

Observers have been recording the weather for nearly six decades at the Mile High Swinging Bridge on the North Carolina peak.
