Candlelight vigil for Alma Lawson brings hope to community

Sunday, December 23rd, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The CUE Center for Missing Persons held a candlelight vigil at St. Phillips church in Wilmington this weekend in honor of Alma Lawson, 83-years-old, who has been missing since November 4th.

Faith is a word that was used often at the vigil. Given the turn out, it is clear the community has not yet given up.

“I am trusting that they will find Miss Alma alive someplace,” said Reverend Deother Melvin.

Lawson’s family says the vigil was important to the case. It not only restored hope, but it made people remember.

“It meant everything to us in terms of keeping her name active and out in the public,” said Lawson’s daughter Bridgette.

Members of the community say they will never forget about Alma Lawson. They say she is a lovely person who only spoke kind words. She went to church every Sunday, and she loved talking to people. They want her back, and they want answers.

“We don’t know anything,” said Bridgette Lawson. “That is the problem. We have no answers. There are no periods to the end of sentences.”

Above all odds, the family is still staying strong, leaning on one thing they say meant the most to Alma.

“Our family is built on faith,” says Tracy, Lawson’s granddaughter. “So we are just holding strong to that faith knowing that God is in control and that things are going to work out. They really are, they are going to work out.”

If you have any information about Alma Lawson, please call the Wilmington Police Department.
