How are fiscal cliff talks affecting your spending?

Saturday, December 22nd, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With legislators deadlocked as usual, many are worried about a fall over the fiscal cliff. But that’s in Washington. What about here at home? We went out to see how the fiscal cliff is affecting Christmas in our town.

Local retailers are tense in the days before Christmas, many have seen an unusual pattern this year.

“It’s going normal. A little bit off,” said Robert Smith, a supervisor at Provision Company. “I felt like it started a little early in November then got normal in December. I’d say it’s a little bit off form last year.”

Smith sees his sales tied to the economy.

“I think the long-term effect is the recession, and the short-term effect is probably the fiscal cliff,” Smith said. “People are worried about that. Of course every shopper is different, and that comes down to your personal economy.”

Shopper Joey Gore said, “My shopping was great. Really got in the spirit this week, got all of it done, great deals, all wrapped and all cash. No credit. Had a great time doing it.”

There are many shoppers watching spending and rethinking their purchases.

“I think it does for me just in anticipation of what might happen at the beginning of the year,” Katherine Hankins said. “It makes me think twice about how much I’m spending, and what I am spending it on.”

Still, it is Christmas, and that is a time for hope.

“I really hope they get something done,” Gore said. “It’s time for both sides to find some middle ground and work together, because if not it’s going to be a pretty big tax burden on middle class folks like ourselves.”

Most people we spoke with are hoping that something gets done, or 2013 could be the year of the shrinking gift list.
