NYPD sued over Empire State shooting

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

MINEOLA, NY (AP) — A University of North Carolina student wounded in last summer’s shooting outside the Empire State Building is suing New York City police department.

Chenin Duclos and eight other bystanders were wounded by police gunfire, ricochets and fragments. Officers were engaged in a gunfight with a man suspected of gunning down a former co-worker.

Duclos alleges the officers were grossly negligent.

The lawsuit says police should have taken steps to avoid the confrontation. It suggests they should have waited until he moved away from bystanders.

The shooting happened as thousands were on the streets surrounding the landmark on a bright August morning.

There was no immediate comment from city officials.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. It was filed Tuesday in Manhattan’s state Supreme Court.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Man breaks into store through roof

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Surf City Police have released surveillance video of a man who broke into a store earlier this month through the ceiling. Police say it happened just after 3 a.m. Jan. 9 at Tsunami Surf Shop at 13523 NC 50 in Surf City.

Investigators say the suspect appears to be a white male between 15 and 25 years old, about 5’10” with a medium build.

Police say he entered from an air conditioning duct on the roof of the store. They say he dropped about 30 feet and landed on a metal display rack with a glass plate on the top rack, which police say broke when he landed.

Investigators say surveillance video (above) shows the suspect apparently limping through the store.

Police say he left out the back door of the store after about 15 minutes with about $700 worth of merchandise.

Police are looking for help identifying the suspect or his car, which was also caught on camera. Anyone with information can contact Surf City Police at (910) 328-7711 or e-mail jclaxton@surfcitypolice.com.
