Names released of victims in fatal crash on US 421 in Pender Co.

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two people are dead after a crash between a log truck and a car in Pender County.

According to Highway Patrol, Debra Potter of Salemburg, and Juanita Potter of Clinton were both killed in the crash.

One man heard everything.

“It was unbelievable, you know? The day started out as normal. And then for something like that to happen, it is tragic.”

Jesse Fennell is trying to forget what he saw today. He says he was in his work shop when he heard what sounded like two explosions.

“It sounded like two bombs were going off.”

A car heading North on U.S Highway 421 crossed the center line…colliding with a log truck traveling in the opposite direction.

“I ran up to the truck, he was getting out of the truck and he said he was okay. So we walked back down. That’s when I saw the Chevy.”

Investigators say two women were killed in the accident, while others were taken to the hospital.

“One lady was laying out in a ditch in front of the car. And then there was another gentleman; he was pinned inside. He was okay.”

The victims were not from the area. Investigators are withholding their names until next of kin is notified.
