NC lawmaker foresees anti-abortion measures ahead

Monday, January 21st, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A North Carolina lawmaker says his colleagues in the General Assembly are likely to consider proposals to exclude abortion coverage from federal health insurance exchanges and to outlaw abortions based on gender preferences.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Rep. Paul “Skip” Stam said a law is being drafted to remove abortions from the health care exchange. He also said lawmakers will also need to deal with getting abortions based on sex selection.

Stam addressed a crowd Saturday at an anti-abortion rally in Nash Square in Raleigh.

Executive Director Suzanne Buckley of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina said 11 anti-choice bills were introduced and six passed during the last legislative session, and she expects the upcoming session to be worse for pro-choice forces.

Obama speech sets stage for looming policy fights

Monday, January 21st, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has prepared a second inaugural address that broadly lays out his vision for the country’s future while leaving the details of the policy fights over taxes, guns, immigration and other divisive issues for another day.

White House aides say the president will not make a policy speech Monday after taking his oath of office on the Capitol’s west front. Rather, the president plans to use the moment as it traditionally has been used in most of the 56 previous inaugurations – to talk about American values.

White House advisers see the inaugural speech as the opening opportunity to discuss Obama’s second-term agenda, but in broad terms. They say he will talk policy specifics at the State of the Union address Feb. 12.

NC waited before disclosing meningitis outbreak

Monday, January 21st, 2013

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Emails show North Carolina officials didn’t notify the public about the possibility of a fungal meningitis outbreak until five days after they learned of the possibility.

The emails obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request show how the state handled the situation. The outbreak, caused by tainted injections, has killed 40 people nationwide and sickened more than 600.

The pharmacy that distributed the medication has been shut down since the outbreak was discovered in September.

Working with the CDC, the state health agency wrestled with what to tell the public, including whether to name the clinics suspected of administering the contaminated medication.

Health department spokeswoman Julie Henry says officials wanted to have all the facts before releasing information because it would have raised more questions than answers.
