NC wreck claims life of 6th person

Monday, January 21st, 2013

SPENCER, NC (AP) — Police in a North Carolina town say another person has died from injuries suffered when an SUV crashed into a tree, raising the death toll to six.

Nine people were in the GMC Envoy that crashed Friday night in the Rowan County town of Spencer, about 50 miles northeast of Charlotte. Spencer police say 8-year-old Taliah Williams died Sunday night at Brenners Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem after being taken off life support.

Authorities earlier identified the driver as 28-year-old Angela Monique Dunlap of Spencer, who killed. Also killed were 25-year-old Sean Jacobs and 4-year-old Karizma Sexton, who shared the same Salisbury address; and 10-year-old Daja Cathcart and 45-year-old Vincent McNeal of Salisbury.

Three other children were injured.

Wake County residents needed for cancer study

Monday, January 21st, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The American Cancer Society is looking for Wake County residents who don’t have a history of the disease to take part in a research project.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that researchers need about 1,000 Wake County residents ages 30 to 65 to participate in the nationwide study.

The residents can sign up by telephone or online. In March, they’ll visit one of 10 locations to give blood samples and have their waist measurements taken.

They’ll receive health questionnaires every two to three years after that.

The Cancer Prevention Study-3 will involve 300,000 participants nationwide. Its purpose is to get information about behaviors, environmental factors and other lifestyle issues.

Previous studies helped researchers understand risks associated with the disease, such as smoking and obesity.
