Former mayor criticizes city for lack of lighting in arts center parking lot

A former Wilmington mayor has resigned from the Hannah Block Historic USO Community Arts Center advisory board, in part, because he believes the city did not adequately address safety concerns regarding the parking lot where a 19-year-old was killed last month.

Special events to remember 148th anniversary of battle at Fort Fisher

Fort Fisher, the largest earthen fortification in the Confederacy, once protected the port of Wilmington and the vital blockade running trade on the Cape Fear River. But after two massive bombardments, the Fort fell to a Union infantry assault on January 15, 1865.

Bladen Co. native to be enshrined in Astronaut Hall of Fame

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — A Bladen County native will be inducted this spring into the US Astronaut Hall of Fame. Curtis Brown of Elizabethtown is one of three astronauts who will be enshrined during a ceremony at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Brown flew on six space shuttle missions. He was commander of Discovery when Sen. John Glenn returned to space on STS-95 in 1998. He joins Eileen Collins and Bonnie Dunbar in this year’s Hall of Fame class.

The trio will be inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame April 20. Previous inductees include Glenn, Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, James Lovell, Sally Ride and Alan Shepard.

Evacuated students, staff return to Bladen Co. school after bomb threat investigated

Elizabethtown Primary School was evacuated Friday morning in response to a bomb threat, a Bladen County school system spokesperson confirmed.
