NC legislators offered tax overhaul options

Monday, January 28th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A Washington-based conservative-leaning think tank is providing options to North Carolina elected officials on how to overhaul the tax system so that it says the state’s tax climate would improve significantly.

The Tax Foundation released Monday a study commissioned by the Carolina Business Coalition, whose board includes former BB&T Corp. chief executive John Allison and ex-GlaxoWellcome CEO Bob Ingram.

The report highlights four ideas it says the General Assembly should consider, providing advantages and disadvantages to all. The options adjust state sales tax and individual income tax rates up and down and reduce or eliminate the corporate income taxes.

Republican legislative leaders say this year they want to modernize the tax system and lower income taxes or end them all together. The General Assembly reconvenes Wednesday.

Arguments set for February on NC redistricting

Monday, January 28th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A three-judge panel has set aside two days next month to hear arguments whether new boundaries for North Carolina legislative and congressional districts should be thrown out or upheld.

The Superior Court judges hearing a pair of lawsuits filed by Democrats and other groups challenging the 2011 maps announced Monday they would listen to lawyers on their motions Feb. 25 and 26 in Raleigh.

The litigation had been stuck in neutral for months while the state Supreme Court considered what kind of documents state-paid private attorneys for Republican legislative leaders must release. The justices ruled last Friday, siding with lawmakers who argued some documents can remain confidential.

The lawsuits are likely to return to the Supreme Court for rulings regardless of how the three judges rule on the maps’ legality.

Maj. Lewis Hatcher says investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened that led to the fight. Hatcher says they believe two other inmates may have been involved in the incident, but at this point they are unsure.

Davis had been in jail for two weeks after being arrested on charges from South Carolina when his jaw was broken. Davis is back in jail.
