ONLY ON 3: New bus company to offer late-night routes between downtown, UNCW

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new bus company is trying to get more people downtown and says it’s willing to go the extra mile to get you there.

The new company Wilmington Transit is still in the planning stages, but founders say the route will be up and running by the end of March.

Although the routes have not been finalized yet, the company says it will connect major apartment communities, UNCW and downtown Wilmington from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

Right now, Wave Transit does not offer transportation after 9:30 p.m. from the university. That’s why the new company says it thinks the new routes are needed in Wilmington. Potential riders agree.

“I think that will be very good, because people do have to do things at certain times of night like jobs, they may have to work somewhere and for other reasons,” Antonio Auther, who’s excited about the bus service, said. “They may have to go to friend’s house and other things of that nature.”

Wilmington Transit says it is working with Bring It! Downtown to promote safe and affordable fun.

Prices and specifics routes have not been set yet, but organizers, who did not want to go on camera, say the service will cut down on DWIs and other traffic violations as well.

The company is trying to gauge the level of interest in the idea, and says so far it has seen a lot of positive feedback.
