‘The Big Read’ celebrates literacy in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Big Read is a national program designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Daphne Holmes represents Cameron Art Museum, one of the the community partners, and sat down with Good Morning Carolina anchor Ashley Jacobs to discuss some of the upcoming events to celebrate literacy. Two events will take place this weekend. Watch her full interview for all the details.

Flamenco guitarist William ‘Paco’ Strickland has died

WILMINGTON, NC (STARNEWSONLINE.COM) — William "Paco" Strickland, a flamenco guitarist and a familiar presence in Wilmington night spots and on local airwaves for more than two decades, died Monday night at his home after a long battle with bone marrow cancer. He was 60.

"Paco quietly and peacefully passed while sleeping next to me," wrote his wife, Connie Nelson, in a Facebook posting Tuesday afternoon. "He wants you to remember him playing his guitar and surfing Big Blue."
