NC poultry plant fined for wastewater violations

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) – A federal judge has ordered a North Carolina poultry processor to pay a $150,000 fine for sending untreated wastewater containing blood and turkey parts directly to a city treatment plant.

The judge also sentenced House of Raeford Farms Inc. to two years’ probation and ordered the company to pay a special assessment of $4,000 for 10 counts of knowingly violating the Clean Water Act.

The U.S. Justice Department said that the poultry producer allowed employees to send untreated wastewater contaminated with blood, grease and body parts from slaughtered turkeys directly to the city of Raeford’s wastewater treatment plant without telling city officials.

The company has said the government admitted during a trial last year that none of the materials it said went into the town’s sewer system reached the environment.

1 wounded in shooting on Coastal Carolina University campus

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

CONWAY, SC (AP) — A spokeswoman says one person has been wounded in a shooting at a school apartment complex near Coastal Carolina University, and a lockdown of campus buildings has been ordered.

School spokeswoman Martha Hunn said the gunman was still at large Tuesday night.

She said dispatchers received a call around 7:20 p.m. regarding a shooting at University Place, which is adjacent to S.C. Highway 544.

Hunn said the victim was transported to a local hospital.

According to the school’s website, University Place houses almost 2,000 students.

Coastal Carolina University has an enrollment of slightly more than 9,000 students. Its website says there are 72 buildings on campus covering 630 acres. The school, founded in 1954, is in Conway, 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.

Attorneys wrap up arguments in NC redistricting

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A court hearing involving a pair of lawsuits over the maps drawn by Republicans for North Carolina’s congressional and legislative districts is over.

The panel of three Superior Court judges heard about 10 hours of testimony over two days before going home Tuesday. They didn’t immediately issue rulings over whether the maps are lawful or should be struck down. It’s unclear when the judges will have their decisions.

At issue are boundaries the General Assembly drew and voted for in 2011 that contributed to GOP gains at both the legislature and in the U.S. House.

Attorneys representing Democrats and advocacy groups argue dozens of districts are racial gerrymanders. Lawyers for the state and GOP legislative leaders disagree and say they followed redistricting criteria laid out by the state Supreme Court.
