Leland church set to rebuild more than two years after fire

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — More than two years after fire destroyed their church, a Leland congregation is ready to rebuild.

Blackwell AME Zion Church burned down in the early morning of September 19, 2010. It was one of three suspicious fires in the area that week, but the church’s pastor Rev. Felecia Jones says the mystery was never solved.

Jones says her small congregation managed to stick together since the fire, and this weekend they’ll break ground on a new building.

Saturday’s celebration will start with a service at 3:30 p.m. at Johnson Chapel AME Zion Church at 1882 Lincoln Road NE in Leland. After that, they’ll head to the groundbreaking ceremony at 10015 Blackwell Road.

Jones says the building will cost about $250,000. She says it should take four to six months to build.
