Driver charged with murder, 4th DWI in Friday crash

Monday, February 25th, 2013

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Leland man with an extensive history of drunk driving offenses is charged with murder after a car crash on US 74/76 Friday in Columbus County. Today a judge set Pierre Walker’s bond at $1 million.

Investigators say Walker, 26, is charged with second degree murder and habitual driving while intoxicated for his role in the death of 61-year-old Martha Mintz.

Troopers say Walker did not have a license due to three previous DWIs when he crossed over the median hitting Mintz’s Chevrolet HHR nearly head-on near Delco Friday afternoon.

Prosecutors say Walker’s first DWI was in October 2012 in Brunswick County. They say he was arrested after nearly hitting an officer at a DWI checkpoint and then fleeing.

Earlier this month Walker was convicted of a second DWI in New Hanover County, according to Jon David, District Attorney for Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen counties. A week later, David, said, Walker was convicted of a third DWI also in New Hanover County. David said the judge suspended the 60-day sentence because Walker had a probation hearing scheduled for today in Columbus County. David said Walker is on probation in Brunswick and New Hanover counties as well.

David said in the week between Walker’s second and third convictions, police cited Walker three times for traffic violations in New Hanover County.

Investigators suspect Walker was under the influence of drugs at the time of Friday’s accident.

Busy intersection back open after crash takes down pole, traffic signals

Monday, February 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The intersection of College Rd. and Shipyard Blvd. is back open after a crash took down a pole and traffic signals early Monday.

Police say DOT crews worked for close to 4 hours to repair the power outages caused by the crash.

According to Sgt. Warren Kennedy with Wilmington Police, a vehicle hit a power pole around midnight on Monday, bringing down wires and traffic lights at the busy Wilmington intersection.

Sgt. Kennedy says the crash impacted traffic and power outages through Monday morning, since the traffic signals ended up on the ground.

Wilmington Police were at the scene into the morning, directing traffic when DOT crews arrived around 5 a.m. from out of town to repair the signals.

After 4 hours of work, DOT crews were able to repair the signals, and police re-opened the intersection to traffic.

Sgt. Warren says traffic is now back to normal for the busy intersection.
