Sweepstakes owner cited, machines seized

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County is cracking down on sweepstakes parlors still running despite a law against them.

The owner of 777 Sweepstakes faces a citation of running an illegal gambling operation on Gordon Road.

Deputies seized several sweepstakes machines from the business just after 7 last night. They did, though, leave the store’s computers.

A sheriff’s office spokesman says the citation against 777 owner Leo Daniels cannot stop him from reopening with new machines. If he does, though, Daniels could face another citation for having the games outlawed last year.

We went by 777 this afternoon to try and talk to Daniels, but the business was closed. He told the StarNews he plans to meet with his attorney to see what his options are.
