Police recover iPad, BB gun in connection to robbery; parts of downtown blocked off

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department say they have recovered a BB gun and an iPad in connection to an armed robbery Friday that has prompted authorities to block off a portion of downtown Wilmington.

Carolina Beach Inlet dredging underway

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The US Army Corps of Engineers began dredging the Carolina Beach Inlet today at the north end of Freeman Park.

Work will last four to five weeks and include part of Snow’s Cut. Crews will place some dredged sand on Freeman Park Beach, which will remain open during the work.

People visiting the beach are advised to stay away from piping and construction areas.

At least 1 person killed in crash on U.S. 74/76

One vehicle, a sport-utility vehicle with LabCorp markings, is in a ditch with a sheet over the windshield.

One dead in crash near Columbus/Brunswick line

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One person is dead after a crash on US 74/76 in Columbus County near the Brunswick County line.

Highway Patrol says it happened when a Cadillac Deville heading west on 74/76 hit a white van. A trooper says the Cadillac continued heading west until it cross the median and hit a Chevrolet HHR belonging to LabCorp nearly head-on.

Investigators say the driver of the HHR died at the scene. The driver of the Cadillac was taken to the hospital.

Highway Patrol has not released the names of anyone involved.
