Businesses reopen day after bombs forced evacuations

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Business owners and employees forced to evacuate yesterday as state and federal agents investigated explosive in a Carolina Beach Road storage unit went back to work this morning.

Hairstylist Lois Moore at Gossip Salon says the evacuation put her in a sticky situation.

“I’m doing a perm, and this officer comes in and says we have to have an immediate evacuation,” she said. “When you’re doing chemicals, you can’t just run our the door, because these things have a procedure you have to do, so it was a very traumatic experience for me and the client.”

A few door down at Chip’s Computers, Robert Johnson recalls the minutes before the mandatory evacuation.

“There was a big explosion. Bang. Shook everything,” he said. “Then we walked out there to check everything, and they said everything was fine. About an hour, hour and a half later they told us it was a voluntary evacuation.”

Johnson says evacuees were in such a hurry to get out, one woman even ran into his car when he was trying to leave.

After a quick phone call to the sheriff’s office early Friday morning to make sure everything was OK, the businesses reopened.

As for that perm cut short, if you’re wondering how it turned out, Moore’s not sure.

“Well I really don’t know,” Moore said. “We put her in the sink and ran her out the door, so I said come back next week and we’ll finish it.”

Ashley Jacobs leaving us, focusing on family

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A valued member of our newsroom family is leaving next week to spend more time with her own family.

Ashley Jacobs, who has co-anchored “Good Morning Carolina” with Tim Buckley the last year, has decided to hop out of broadcasting for a bit to focus on her two young children.

For the past twelve months, Ashley has gotten up in the middle of the night, driven to the station from Onslow County, anchored the newscast, and then driven all the way back – never missing a beat. (Except the morning she called me around 4 a.m. to tell me she had hit a deer)

Ashley is also married to an active duty Marine, so you can imagine how busy her life is.

She and Tim brought tremendous energy and chemistry to GMC. It’s hard to give up someone so good, but I also believe with all my heart that family comes first.

While we look for her replacement, we’re lucky to have Randy “to the Rescue” Aldridge filling in for us. While he has spent most of his career in interior design, Randy actually has a journalism degree from UNC, and he tells me he’s excited to finally put it to work.

We wish Ashley and her family all the best. Thank you, Ashley, for all you brought to the station. You will be missed.
