Confederate flag at old NC Capitol coming down

Friday, March 29th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A Confederate battle flag hung inside the old North Carolina State Capitol to mark the sesquicentennial of the Civil War is being taken down after civil rights leaders raised concerns.

Cultural Resources Secretary Susan Kluttz said Friday night that the intent of the exhibit was to represent the State Capital as it was in 1863.

Kluttz said the exhibit was temporary. But since she’s learned that Gov. Pat McCrory plans to use the old House chamber as working space, the display will come down this weekend.

The flag was to remain on display through April 2015.

McCrory spokeswoman Kim Genardo said the flag exhibit will be relocated, possibly to the N.C. Museum of History. A final decision is expected next week.

Rouzer to run again for Congress from 7th District in 2014

Friday, March 29th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A former North Carolina state senator who lost narrowly a congressional bid to Democratic incumbent Mike McIntyre in November says he’ll run again for the 7th District seat in 2014.

Republican David Rouzer of Johnston County told The Insider that he would announce his candidacy officially next week. Rouzer lost to McIntyre by 654 votes of the more than 336,000 cast. He conceded following recounts in the southeastern North Carolina district, but left the door open for a repeat campaign.

Rouzer did not immediately return a phone call Friday from The Associated Press.

McIntyre is in his ninth term and has filed paperwork to run for a tenth. He was targeted in 2012 by national Republicans after redistricting cut out Democratic precincts and his hometown of Lumberton.

Bridge construction could create holiday-headache

Friday, March 29th, 2013

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Traffic along Carolina Beach Road was backed up for miles this afternoon, and construction on the Snow’s Cut Bridge is to blame. Signs directed cars to shift to the left lane over 2 miles away from the bridge, causing a stand-still in traffic. Drivers say what used to be a quick drive to and from work has turned into a headache.

“I live on Kure Beach. I work in Monkey Junction also. It usually takes me about five minutes to get over the bridge, not 45 minutes,” said one frustrated driver.

The bridge construction isn’t only frustrating drivers. It also has Carolina Beach businesses on edge. Easter is one of the busiest weekends for Britt’s Donuts down in Carolina Beach. The owner says he hopes the bridge won’t cause any problems.

“It is a necessary thing that they do it, but it is a really big inconvenience,” said Britts Donut Shop owner Bobby Nevins.

Nevins says the timing could have been better.
