USDA fines NC hospital over animal research

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has levied a $35,000 fine on Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for violating the Animal Welfare Act in connection with its animal research procedures.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports (http://bit.ly/146jV3Z ) that hospital officials said Tuesday that is has paid the fine, which was the result of an agreement between the Agriculture Department and Wake Forest Baptist

The USDA had investigated eight events between 2009 and 2012, among them the escape of a female monkey from a university research center near Clemmons in June 2012. The monkey was recovered unharmed.

USDA cited Wake Forest Baptist for that incident in August 2012. The other events include the deaths of 21 research rabbits and additional lapses by the medical center in its animal research procedures.

NC mechanic killed when tractor falls on him

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

THOMASVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Officials in Davidson County say a mechanic has died after a tractor-trailer he was repairing fell on him.

Larry James, interim director of the Davidson County Emergency Services, said 22-year-old Paul Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene.

James said Peterson was working under the front of a tractor-trailer when it fell on him and pinned him underneath late Monday afternoon. He said bystanders tried to get Peterson out from beneath the tractor-trailer, but were unable to free him.

James didn’t know what caused the tractor-trailer to fall. He said the N.C. Department of Labor was conducting an investigation into the accident.

8th Marine dies after Nevada mortar explosion

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

HAWTHORNE, Nev. (AP) – A Veterans of Foreign Wars official says an eighth Marine has died after a mortar shell explosion during mountain warfare training in Nevada’s high desert.

John Stroud, national junior vice commander in chief for the VWF, began a memorial event near the site of the blast by saying “one of the critical has passed.”

Mourners then laid eight floral arrangements at a park near the Hawthorne Army Depot.

Stroud says he spoke with Marine officers who gave him the news before Tuesday night’s ceremony. Messages left for a Marine spokesman were not immediately returned.

The explosion occurred Monday night at the sprawling facility during an exercise involving the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Several Marines from the unit were injured in the blast.

The identities of those killed won’t be released until 24 hours after their families are notified.
