Local reaction to Pope Francis

Sunday, March 17th, 2013

Wilmington, NC (WWAY)– The Latin American community makes up forty percent of the world’s Catholics. The Spanish speaking community is celebrating the new era of Pope Francis the First.

“This makes us really proud” said Marisol Gomez Quintane.
Norma Rivera says “It means a lot that he can speak to us in our own language.”
“It was proud of him because yeah, he does make a change” said Arely Ramieraz.

Traditionally, the top honor in the Catholic Church has gone to a European. Jorge Bergoglio is the first Pope from the Americas, specifically Argentina. He is also the first Jesuit Pope.

The former Arch Bishop of Buenos Aires took a vow of poverty and lived a simple life style, which some think will add to his ability to lead the church.

“That is certainly a great value” said Father Bob of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church.

With controversy surrounding the Roman Catholic Church, Catholics are hopeful about the future and the role Pope Francis will have.

“I think we need that unity. The person that will bring us back together” says Rivera, “I mean the Catholic Church has a lot of problems too and I think he is the right person to bring all of us together.”

Father Bob said he isn’t quite sure what Pope Francis’ leadership means to the Church yet, but the Pontiff is off to a great start.
