Residents dispose of hazardous wastes properly

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Residents of New Hanover County drove by the Customs Building at Wilmington International Airport today to dispose of potentially dangerous household items properly.

“A lot of these liquids could cause damage to the waterways if there were a leak in the landfill,” says New Hanover County’s Solid Waste Planner Lynn Bestul. “We try to keep all of those chances away.”

The annual household hazardous waste event keeps hazardous waste out of landfills. Mercury from thermostats, lead contained within electronics, and even paint are all items found around the house that could create big problems.

Bestul says the majority of the population in New Hanover County is aware of these potential dangers. He says people are more and more environmentally conscious, and the nearly 500 cars that drove through by lunchtime prove it.

“Well, I have had this in my garage for almost a year,” says New Hanover County resident Jerry Strickland. “This is a good opportunity to get rid of it in the proper way.”

This is New Hanover County’s last annual household hazardous waste collection event. As of May 15th, the county is opening a permanent household hazardous waste facility along Highway 421.
