Onslow County man to use Cash 5 win to make home repairs

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Dexter Barlow, a retiree from Swansboro, plans to use his $114,957 Cash 5 prize to make repairs to his home.

Barlow matched all five numbers in the March 22 drawing. He learned of his big win while sitting at home on Saturday morning.

“I sat down with my laptop to check my numbers and saw I had won a few dollars on my other tickets,” Barlow said. “Then I got down to the last ticket I had purchased. I looked at the screen, then back at my ticket. I did that about four times. That’s when I started shaking.”

Barlow also plans to use a portion of his winnings, worth $78,172 after taxes, to share with his children and save for the future. He purchased his lucky ticket at the Handy Mart on West Corbett Avenue in Swansboro.

“Wow,” Barlow said as he held his check for the first time. “This is neat. I feel numb and excited at the same time.”

NC woman sentenced for stealing crab pots

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

ELIZABETH CITY, NC (AP) — State officials say a Pasquotank County woman has been sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to stealing nearly 50 crab pots from other commercial fishermen.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported that 42-year-old Carla Winslow Dewald pleaded guilty earlier this month to misdemeanor larceny and improper buoys on crab pots.

The Division of Marine Fisheries says Dewald also was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service in 180 days and pay fines, fees, court costs and restitution totaling more than $1,200.

Authorities say Dewald was accused of stealing 48 crab pots from eight people.

The deferred prosecution agreement means all charges will be dropped if she completes all the requirements within a specified period of time.
