NCDOT says aircraft changes will save $500K

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The Department of Transportation says its plans to switch out two North Carolina government-owned planes and one helicopter with newer and more efficient aircraft will save $500,000 annually.

DOT announced Monday it will sell initially a Cessna jet and Sikorsky helicopter and replace them with a turbo propeller aircraft and Bell helicopter. The new plane can be used for aerial photography and ferrying state officials. The Bell helicopter will be shared with the Highway Patrol.

A 2012 report by the legislature’s fiscal watchdog agency recommended the state get rid of the Sikorsky because it flied less than six hours a month for $560,000 in 2011. The report said the Bell could be operated at 40 percent lower costs.

DOT also plans to sell another airplane and obtain a smaller aircraft.

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Last week the Pender County animal shelter was the point of allegations. Two weeks ago, inspectors found animals not being properly cared for but those problems seemed to be corrected. The shelter passed a re-inspection Monday.

Pender County Manager, Mickey Duvall told WWAY he wanted to spend 20 thousand dollars for new kennels and upgrades for the facility.

Duvall also said the Sheriff’s office asked the SBI to view video of last week’s meeting to determine if the Bureau wants to investigate allegations by volunteers.

Judge rules just 1 jury in Army sex charge trial

Monday, March 25th, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – A judge has decided that just one jury will hear all charges against a U.S. Army general charged with sexual misconduct.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/14jYCvG ) that lawyers for Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair said Monday they wanted to separate a trial over an alleged physical relationship he had with one woman from the charges of inappropriate, but non-physical, relationships he is accused of having with several other women. The lawyers said the jury might be overwhelmed.

But a judge ruled the jury of all generals were highly educated and likely to follow instructions.

The judge is hearing three days of motions in Sinclair’s court martial on charges that include forcible sodomy, indecent acts, violating orders and adultery. He didn’t make a decision on whether prosecutors could use Sinclair’s personal emails.
