First female shuttle pilot to speak on NASA experiences

Monday, March 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The first female space shuttle pilot and commander will speak about her experiences with NASA, and lessons learned in times of disaster.

First a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force, Collins was chosen for the astronaut program, which eventually landed her leadership roles with NASA.

In 2003, Collins was scheduled to comman a shuttle flight for NASA; but about a month before the scheduled takeoff, the Space Shuttle Columbia disentegrated during re-entry over Texas.

As a part of UNCW’s Leadership Lecture Series, Collins recounts her own experiences, and will talk about some of the lessons the space agency learned over failed launches.

The lecture takes place Monday night at UNCW’s Burney Center at 7 p.m.

The new Duke Energy serves more than 7 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The company now has almost 28,000 employees.
