NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Trey Stephens is 7 years old and has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for over 6 months. This Saturday, his parents brought him to the Hoggard High School’s field house where the wrestling team crowned Trey honorary team member for the day, and Make-A-Wish granted Trey’s dream of going to Wrestlemania.
“You know, we think we have struggles, and then you hear about a young kid in elementary school,” said Hoggard’s wrestling coach Craig Underwood. “I mean, he should be thinking about wrestling with his buddies not fighting cancer.”
Trey said he had a lot of fun. He said he loves wrestling and watching his favorite wrestler, John Cena, do his special moves.
“I baptized him into wrestling when we were sitting when we were sitting in the hospital at Chapel Hill because I grew up kind of watching it,” said Trey’s father. “He couldn’t really move around a whole lot, so we started watching and playing on X-box.”
Trey’s father says he is grateful for all the help and donations Make-A-Wish and Hoggard wrestlers have made. Underwood says the mark Trey left on his team, is more of a blessing.
