UPDATE: Man charged with assault after cutting off-duty officer at bar

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man who pulled a knife on an off-duty officer at a bar and sent another to the hospital early Friday faces assault charges.

The bar fight happened around 1 a.m. at Sand Bar in University Commons on S. College Road.

Wilmington police say it all started when Rochi Kevin Sutton began groping girls in the bar. Someone then confronted the Sutton, trying to break up what police are calling the assault of several women.

That’s when Sutton pulled out a knife, cutting the man trying to break up the assault in the face.

After hitting a woman in the head with a beer bottle, an off-duty Wrightsville Beach police officer helped take Sutton out of the bar.

Once police arrived at the scene, the off-duty officer realized he was cut in the forearm.

The officer drove himself to the hospital, and the man cut in the face was transported by EMS.

Police found Sutton at a gas station nearby on College Acres, and took him into custody, and then to the hospital for treatment.

It appears that Sutton was badly beaten when he was walking to the store.

Sutton is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He is in jail under a $200,000 secured bond.
