Bar fight involving a knife sends off-duty officer to hospital

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man who pulled out a knife during a Wilmington bar fight sent 3 people to the hospital early Friday, including an off-duty Wrightsville Beach police officer.

It happened around 1 a.m. at Sand Bar in University Commons on S. College Road.

Wilmington police say it all started when a man was groping girls in the bar. Someone then confronted the man, trying to break up what police are calling the assault of several women.

That’s when the suspect pulled out a knife, cutting the man trying to break up the assault in the face.

After hitting a woman in the head with a beer bottle, an off-duty Wrightsville Beach police officer helped take the man out of the bar.

Once police arrived at the scene, the off-duty officer realized he was cut in the forearm.

The officer drove himself to the hospital, and the man cut in the face was transported by EMS.

Police found the man at a gas station nearby on College Acres, and took him into custody, and then to the hospital for treatment.

Police say the man’s last name is Sutton, and he is facing several charges, including assault.
