DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – The suspect in the shooting death of a Pennsylvania football player told a jury that he thought he was going to be shot when he fired at the victim’s teammates in a Durham parking.
Gabriel James Gamez testified on his own behalf Monday in his murder trial. The 24-year-old is accused in the death of 18-year-old Darrell Turner and was charged with assault after a teammate from Gateway High School in Monroeville, Pa., was shot in the leg. The players and their team had stopped in Durham en route to a Florida football camp in June 2011.
Gamez told the court he began firing after a player gestured as if he were about to draw a handgun.
Gamez was the last witness to testify. Closing arguments are scheduled for Tuesday.
