UPDATE: Arrest made for Pender County fire

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

ROCKY POINT, NC (WWAY) –- The owner of the Rocky Point mobile home, Gary Futrell, was arrested and charged with 2nd degree arson.

He is being held at the Pender County Jail under a $20,000.000 secure bond.

Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins said mobile homes tend to hold in heat and burn quicker than most homes.

“The heavy fire damage was confined to mostly the bedroom area, but the house is pretty much destroyed,” Collins said.

Investigators say neighbors called for help just before 5 o’clock Wednesday evening. They speculate the fire had been burning for quite some time before officials got the call.

“This looks like a well-seeded fire, so it’s probably been burning some time before anyone even noticed it,” Collins said.

It took multiple fire departments to put out the blaze. Long Creek, Rocky Point, Burgaw, Atkinson and Hampstead crews all responded to 65 Turkey Creek Road. Officials attribute this to the water supply in the area.

“The water supply isn’t the best in the world so that’s why you have to call in,” Collins said.

Investigators say the Futrell was intoxicated and wasn’t making much sense when they were questioning him. He was not injured.

“Right now we know we have one tenant and we are trying to get some help for him through the Red Cross,” Collins said.

Officials are also seeking help with their investigation.

“We’ve asked for assistance from the SBI just to rule out any foul play or anything like that,” Collins said.

Officials are still searching for what caused the fire.

Collins said Pender County has averaged one to two structure fires a week since the beginning of this year.
