ONLY ON 3: Giant bird on the loose in Masonboro Sound area

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A giant bird is on the loose in the Masonboro Sound area of New Hanover County.

The rhea, a big, flightless bird similar to an ostrich and an emu, jumped the fence of its enclosure yesterday. A neighbor says the bird is easily startled.

This morning neighbors have been trying to recapture the bird while its owner, a doctor, is in surgery, according to a neighbor.

While there have been some close calls in getting a hold of it, the bird is still on the run. Searchers say at this point, they are leaving it alone. They say the male bird has a female mate for life, which has been calling for him. They believe the escaped bird, which they say must be extremely tired, will eventually come home to the mate. They say it’s mating season, and the male is in “spring fever.”

Neighbors say it’s not the first time the big bird has escaped. They say the bird is very fast, and drivers in the area need to be careful of the 150-pound bird darting into traffic.
