Carolina Beach Road murder investigation continues

Monday, April 29th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man charged with murder in a weekend shooting spent mroe than five years behind bars on a similar charge. Shannon Mitchell is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Gilbert McClammy Saturday night.

Shannon Mitchell is in jail without bond and made his first court appearance today.

Investigators were back at Mitchell’s home Monday afternoon to serve a search warrant. They say Mitchell shot and killed Gilbert McClammy Saturday night outside Mitchell’s home in the Bowdens Mobile Home Park off Carolina Beach Road.

A co-worker says McClammy was a husband and father of two sons and a new born baby girl.

Neighbors at the mobile home park say they heard arguing and then three gun shots. They say Mitchell inherited his grandmother’s home where he and his girlfriend lived. Neighbors say the girlfriend was pregnant by one of McClammy’s sons and a fight broke out between Mitchell and McClammy after his son called him for help. Neighbors did not want to go on camera because they do not know who Mitchell is involved with and this is not his first time behind bars.

The Department of Corrections website shows Mitchell served five years and seven months for a 2006 conviction for accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and several drug charges. Court records show the accessory after the fact charge is from Mitchell throwing away the gun another man used to shoot and kill Wayne Mitchell in 2003.

Shannon Mitchell is scheduled to appear in court later this year.

On McClammy’s facebook page people say he was a loving man who got caught up in his sons’s drama.

Charlotte Mayor Foxx gets seat on Obama’s Cabinet

Monday, April 29th, 2013

GARY D. ROBERTSON
Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A rising star in the North Carolina Democratic Party is heading to Washington for a position in President Obama’s Cabinet that may one day help Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx seek higher office back home.

The president announced Monday at the White House that Foxx is his nominee to succeed Ray LaHood as U.S. transportation secretary.

Foxx recently announced he wasn’t seeking a third term as Charlotte mayor. It’s not immediately clear when he’ll leave the job now. His tenure as mayor has been marked by a successful Democratic National Convention in Charlotte and expanded investment in public transportation.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte political sciience professor Eric Heberlig says a successful term for Foxx in Obama’s Cabinet could bring him the experience to run for US Senate or governor.
