UPDATE: Student’s name released, driver charged in fatal hit-and-run

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

SAMPSON COUNTY, NC (WWAY) –- Authorities have released the name of the little girl killed by a log truck as she got off a school bus in Sampson County Tuesday afternoon.

WTVD reports 7-year-old Alyiah McKenzie Morgan died on the way to the hospital in Clinton after a hit-and-run on Highway 421.

According to WTVD, neighbors told them that Alyiah’s mother was standing nearby when her daughter was hit.

Johnny Allen Spell, Jr., 37, of Roseboro, is charged with passing a stopped school bus, hit and run, and involuntary manslaughter.

Spell is currently in the Sampson County Jail under a $200,000 bond.

When WWAY went to the girl’s parent’s home near Harrells, a family friend said she was in first grade.

Highway Patrol said the child was hit around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. They say she was getting off the school bus between Delway and Harrells.

Investigators also say Spell passed the school bus even though it had its flashers on.

The truck, with a burgundy cab, was loaded with logs.

They say Spell continued South on US 421 after the collision and that they found the truck behind a barn 45 miles away between Roseboro and Autryville.

Police say they do not know if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

HAPPENING TODAY: NRC hosts open house to discuss Brunswick Nuclear Plant

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

SOUTHPORT, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have scheduled an open house for April 24 to discuss the agency’s assessment of safety performance during 2012 for the Brunswick nuclear power plant. The plant, operated by Duke Energy, is near Southport.

The open house, which the public is invited to attend, is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Brunswick Media Center auditorium, 8520 River Road SE, in Southport.

The NRC resident inspectors and other NRC staff will be available to answer questions or provide additional information on the safety performance of the Brunswick plant, as well as the NRC role in ensuring safe plant operations.

Overall, the NRC staff concluded that the Brunswick plant, which has two boiling-water reactors, operated safely in 2012 and is receiving normal detailed oversight and inspection efforts this year.

During the first three quarters of 2012, both Brunswick units were subject to increased NRC oversight for an inspection finding related to the possibility of flooding in the emergency diesel generator fuel oil tank rooms. An NRC inspection found that the problem had been corrected and both units returned to normal oversight in the fourth quarter. All other inspection findings and performance indicators at the plant had very low safety significance.

"The NRC inspects nuclear plants and monitors their performance on an ongoing basis," said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree. "We issue inspection reports throughout the year and we hold these annual meetings near each plant to discuss our oversight and answer any questions local residents may have."

The annual assessment letter for the Brunswick plant is available on the NRC website

Performance information for Brunswick Unit 1 and Unit 2 is updated quarterly and is available on the NRC website.
