Hackers compromise AP Twitter account

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

LONDON (AP) — Hackers have compromised the main Twitter account of The Associated Press, sending out an erroneous tweet about an attack at the White House.

The tweet, which said that there had been two explosions at the White House and President Barack Obama was injured, came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists.

The AP said Tuesday that its Twitter account had been suspended following a hack and said it was working to correct the issue.

The cyberattack is the latest in a string targeting international media organizations.

The tweet put out by hackers briefly sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average sharply lower.

EXTRAORDINARY PERSON: A restauranteur with ‘chops’

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you’ve ever gone for lunch downtown, you probably have seen one of the most recognizable faces in Wilmington.

Chop’s Deli has built quite the reputation downtown through the sandwiches it has built for the last three years. But beyond the Boar’s Head meat and cheeses is its highly recognizable logo, which is a caricature of a guy with the mutton chops: Co-owner Brad Corpening.

“People see me and they see the chops and sometimes they’ll say, ‘Are you that Chop’s guy?’ And I’ll say, ‘Yeah, that’s me. I’m Brad. How’s it going?'” Corpening said.

The 28-year-old was a server at Dixie Grill when he and a co-worker decided to start their own business, hence Chop’s Deli. Since its inception, Corpening has become a walking billboard of a sorts, and you’ll find his face everywhere at the restaurant.

“I’m kind of a cartoony looking guy, big and gangly and just kind of goofy,” he said.

But it’s not just the facial hair that makes Corpening stand out; it’s his customer service. On an average day at Chop’s, you’ll find Corpening walking around the dining room, getting to know his customers and what brought them to Chop’s.

“That’s been probably the most amazing part of the experience is we’ve gotten to know so many great people, and with the downtown community around us, there are people here that are amazing people,” he said.

With a face you can recognize from a mile away, Corpening is hopeful his service with a smile is what leaves a lasting impression and keeps his deli door swinging.

If you’re wondering if Corpening ever shaves his face, he does: Once a year for a charity event.

Wrightsville Beach drawbridge closing tonight

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wrightsville Beach drawbridge will be closing tonight from 11:30 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Town Manager Tim Owens wants to let people know that they will not be able to come on or off the island during those times. Owens says they are staffing up the fire department and there will be an EMS unit on the island for safety precautions or emergencies.

Owens says they are doing everything they can do to be prepared. He says he wants to get the word out to visitors and people that live on the island to be prepared as well.

“Obviously if you had some kind of a house fire or some kind of emergency situation. That’s why we’re staffing up and making sure we are prepared and the bridge can be closed. This is just a little more intense as far as the work they are doing this time. So, we’re trying to get prepared,” Town Manager Tim Owens says.

The DOT and bridge maintenance contractor are doing work underneath the bridge. They are closing during the times they thought would work best for people coming and going from the island.

Owens says there will possibly be 16 more closures between now and October, when the DOT will start working on the top of the bridge.
