Business holds electronics recycling event off Oleander Road

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Happening this week local business “Your Computer Friends” is having an electronics recycling event. They are accepting printers, phones, cell phones, batteries, cables, copiers, fax machines, and desktop and laptop computers.

The last event gathered more than 6 tons of electronic waste from the community.

One woman says it’s held during Earth Week so they can do their part for recycling and taking care of the earth.

“We don’t want to put all of those poisonous metals in our landfills and our future generations don’t want toxics in the ground and the water that we live on. It’s a great time, it’s an awareness time for people so it’s a great time to do a recycling event,” Susan Kadar the Your Computer Friends owner says.

Susan Kadar says she wants to make it easy for people to do the right thing.

You can drop off through Friday from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. at 3816 Oleander Drive behind Whole Foods.

Wrightsville Beach drawbridge closing tomorrow night

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wrightsville Beach drawbridge will be closing tomorrow night from 11:30 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Town Manager Tim Owens wants to let people know that they will not be able to come on or off the island during those times. Owens says they are staffing up the fire department and there will be an EMS unit on the island for safety precautions or emergencies.

Owens says they are doing everything they can do to be prepared. He says he wants to get the word out to visitors and people that live on the island to be prepared as well.

“Obviously if you had some kind of a house fire or some kind of emergency situation. That’s why we’re staffing up and making sure we are prepared and the bridge can be closed. This is just a little more intense as far as the work they are doing this time. So, we’re trying to get prepared,” Town Manager Tim Owens says.

The DOT and bridge maintenance contractor are doing work underneath the bridge. They are closing during the times they thought would work best for people coming and going from the island.

Owens says there will possibly be 16 more closures between now and October, when the DOT will start working on the top of the bridge.
