Trot Nixon added to Wilmington Walk of Fame

Friday, May 31st, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — WWAY’s Trot Nixon was inducted in the Celebrate Wilmington Walk of Fame at the Cotton Exchange this afternoon.

He’s always been a winner, from his days playing high school football and baseball to the big leagues and helping Boston to a World Series victory.

Trot lives in Wilmington with his wife and sons and is never too busy to give back to the community.

“Never in your wildest dreams do you expect to be honored in certain ways,” Nixon said during the induction ceremony. “I had the Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame and now the Wilmington Walk of Fame. I would like to thank every body associated with the Wilmington Walk of Fame for thinking of me.”

Mayor Bill Saffo also declared today Trot Nixon Day in Wilmington.

Trot starred in both baseball and football at New Hanover High School. After graduating in 1993, the Boston Red Sox selected Nixon in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He went on to play in the Majors with the Red Sox, Mets and Indians from 1996 to 2008. He was a member of the 2004 Red Sox, who broke Boston’s 86-year World Series drought.

For the last three years, Trot has served as co-host of WWAY NewsChannel 3’s “5th Quarter” high school football highlight show. He’ll be back again this fall.

The Walk of Fame was adopted as Celebrate Wilmington’s project in 1997 to recognize people who have lived in the Cape Fear region and who have obtained national and international fame in their respective fields. It consists of stones that are permanently set into the walk, located in the Walk of Fame plaza, Water Street entrance of the Cotton Exchange.
