Congress measures Charlotte’s Foxx for Cabinet job

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx has an interview for promotion to a national job.

Foxx is President Barack Obama’s choice to become US transportation secretary. He will be questioned Wednesday afternoon by a Senate committee in his first public step toward expected confirmation. He’s likely to be asked his thoughts about highway and bridge funding, implementing new air-traffic control systems, and urban mass transit.

Most of the people who’ve held the job before Foxx were Washington insiders already known by senators. Foxx is relatively unknown in the nation’s capital beyond being the public face of the city that last fall hosted the Democratic National Convention.

The 42-year-old who’s been Charlotte’s Democratic mayor for four years has drawn little criticism from Senate Republicans or conservative activists.

Michael Jordan: Bobcats changing name to Hornets

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

STEVE REED
AP Sports Writer

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Bobcats owner Michael Jordan says he’s changing his team’s name to the Charlotte Hornets.

Jordan said at a Tuesday press conference he has informed the league of his decision and is optimistic the NBA board of governors will approve the name change when they convene in July.

Charlotte will remain the Bobcats next season, but if all goes as planned Jordan anticipates his team will become the Hornets for the start of the 2014-15 season.

Jordan says the team listened to the fans and “the fans wanted the name back.”

NBA deputy commissioner and COO Adam Silver previously said it would take about 18 months for the Bobcats to change their name.

The Hornets resided in Charlotte from 1988-2002 before then-owner George Shinn relocated the team to New Orleans.
